Synergy Spine Institute

For surgery preparation & recovery

Pre and post-surgical rehabilitation

Before or after spinal surgery, we deliver a staged plan aligned with your surgical team's guidance — helping you prepare well and recover safely and confidently.

Spinal surgery is a big step, and recovery afterwards deserves the same care and planning as the operation itself. Post-surgical spinal rehabilitation is the structured physiotherapy that follows procedures such as discectomy, microdiscectomy, laminectomy and spinal fusion — helping you move safely from protecting the surgical site to rebuilding strength, mobility and confidence. It's a core part of the spine-focused physiotherapy we provide at Synergy Spine Institute in Birtinya.

What to expect at your first visit

If you've recently had spinal surgery — or have a date booked and want to prepare — your first appointment is a thorough assessment. We listen to your story, review your surgeon's guidance and any post-operative instructions you bring, and look carefully at how you're moving now. You'll leave understanding where you are in your recovery, with a clear, staged plan that respects your procedure, your surgeon's protocol and your goals.

When should rehabilitation start?

That depends on your procedure and your surgeon's advice — there is no single timeline that fits everyone. Some people begin gentle, guided movement within weeks; after larger procedures such as spinal fusion, the early focus is usually on protected movement, walking and confidence, with structured rehabilitation building later. We follow your surgical team's guidance, and if you're not sure whether it's too early to book, call us on 07 4801 3084and we'll help you work it out.

Working with your surgeon

Rehabilitation works best when everyone is reading from the same page. We work in the Sunshine Coast Neurosurgery rooms, and — where it helps and with your consent — we communicate with your surgical team and GP, so your plan reflects the operation you actually had and any concerns are raised early through the right channel. If you were referred by a specialist, bring your referral and any operative notes to your first visit.

The procedures we support

  • Discectomy and microdiscectomy — surgery to remove disc material that is pressing on a nerve.
  • Laminectomy — surgery that creates more space for the spinal cord or nerve roots.
  • Spinal fusion and fixation — surgery that joins and stabilises segments of the spine.

Whatever the procedure, the shape of your rehabilitation is tailored to you — the operation you've had, your surgeon's guidance, and how your body is responding week to week.

A staged pathway, explained at every step

Rather than a fixed programme, we work in stages: settle and protect while early healing gets under way; restore comfortable movement; rebuild strength and endurance; then return to the activities that matter to you. You'll always know which stage you're in, what it's for and what comes next — and the plan is reviewed and adjusted as you progress. Many people continue with ongoing spinal physiotherapy once formal rehabilitation winds down.

Common questions

When should physiotherapy start after spinal surgery?

Follow your surgeon's guidance — timing varies with the procedure and the person. If you're unsure whether it's the right time to book, call us on 07 4801 3084 and we'll help you work it out.

Do I need a referral?

No — you can book directly. A GP referral is needed for Medicare or DVA funded plans.

What should I bring to my first visit after surgery?

Your referral if you have one, any post-operative instructions from your surgeon, relevant scans or imaging, and your Medicare card.

Do you work with my surgeon?

Where it helps and with your consent, we communicate with your surgical team and GP so your rehabilitation follows the guidance for your specific procedure. We work in the Sunshine Coast Neurosurgery rooms.

How long does rehabilitation take after spinal surgery?

It genuinely varies — by procedure, by person and by goals. Rather than promise a timeline, we set staged milestones at your first assessment and review them together as you progress.

How much does it cost?

An initial assessment is $250 and follow-up visits are $170.
